The drive from Cetinje to Lovcen is about 12.5 miles (20km) and rises in altitude very quickly. In fact, we had to walk the final 200 yards to the top because more than a foot of snow blanketed the road, making it impossible for the van to take us any further. Our driver and his wife wished us luck as we took off on foot. After hiking up a steep incline and then up hundreds of stairs, Johan & I arrived at the visitors center. We were the only tourists there! The "gatekeeper" (or is it "keymaster?") took a break from watching tv in his small shack to come out and greet us. His English skills were nil, but he was able to communicate with us on how to open the gates of the mausoleum at the top, some 300+ stairs above. It was obvious that the man would rather be sitting in his heated shack than climbing to the top just to let just these two foreigners in. Like chalk on the sidewalk, he took one of the keys and drew on the stairs directions for which of the two keys opened which gate. I was a bit surprised by how well I understood his directions.
