One part of my travel philosophy is to not have great expectations about a place. The higher the expectations, the less likely the place will be able to live up to them. Unfortunately, I arrived in Split with high expectations. I had only planned to be in Split for four hours before getting on a bus bound for Zadar, but that was three hours too many for me. I didn't like Split for the flahy store signs attached to ancient marble buildings, throngs of tourists, and markets selling cheap jewelry and badly replicated art pieces in the shadow of Diocletian's Palace. And to tell you the truth, after a few hours in Split, I became bored. Maybe if I stayed longer and strayed away from the port, I would have appreciated the city a little more.

This photo was taken from within Emperor Diocletian's Palace on top of the St. Domnius Bell Tower looking north.
