» GPS... and You!
  November 26th, 2006

The following was written specifically for the people who have asked to receive e-mail updates. If you would like to receive my e-mail updates while I am in Nicaragua (I will not be updating my website while travelling), please send me an e-mail.

I've entered the final hours of planning for this major trip and I'm just about set! I'll be landing in the capital of Nicaragua (Managua) in a little less than 120 hours. I feel that I've got more than enough supplies, so in the next day or so I'm going to go through each item and ask myself if I really need it. I suspect I'll end up packing about 40 pounds of clothes, camping gear and photography equipment. For some, that might be way too much to lug around, but 40 pounds is less than I've taken on any previous international trip.

I'd like all of you to be prepared for my trip as well. I don't know how often I will be able to send you an update, but I hope that none of you worry too much (Mom). Just know that I will be making smart decisions (Mom) and if you do not hear from me (Mom), then it just means I'm having the time of my life (Mom). This goes to every one of you! (though mainly for my Mom).

When I do have the chance to sit down at an Internet cafe, I'm planning to do something I've never done on previous trips: share the latitude and longitude of my whereabouts. I will be bringing a GPS unit and will be sharing the latitude and longitude coordinates of my present location, allowing you to zoom into the exact building I'm e-mailing you from! Believe me, this will be my most technologically advanced trip yet. I also suggest that you download Google Earth if you can. It is an excellent (free) program that will allow you to view satellite imagery from anywhere on the planet. Be careful though - the program can be extremely addicting. When I first downloaded it, I explored the digital planet for hours.

Here are the links I suggest you bookmark for later:

  • A great introduction to Google Earth
  • To download the latest version of Google Earth
  • Directions on how to look up latitude/longitude in Google Earth.
  • If you cannot use Google Earth, here is another way to look up latitude/longitude.

I will be sending out an e-mail or two before I leave with last-minute information.

Thanks for reading!
