» What Day Is It?
  December 11th, 2006

It feels strange sitting here in front of a computer. I'm afraid to report to all of you wondering where I am that this digital boy has gone native. I have lost all track of time and had to really think about what day of the week it is. I am still living in the jungle at the Proyecto Ecologico where they do not have a computer and power is regularly lost, sometimes eight hours a day. I have been spending my days walking around the property, checking out the flora and fauna, and meandering down to the beach, just a second away. One doesn't need to walk far to see some great nature around here. Today I noticed that little fruit bats like to relax under the awning of the house. I found a boa constrictor's shedded skin near my tent the other day so I spent some time trying to find the snake that it belonged to (without any luck). The staff here are some of the best naturalists in Nicaragua. I found out that the manager is a doctorate student in botany and he was nice enough to point out some of the trees found in the area.

Yesterday I went scuba diving off of the beach. The visibility in the afternoon was about 40 to 50 feet. We dove for about 40 minutes and reached a depth of 70 feet (where my equipment recorded the water at 80 degrees). It wasn't a coral reef, but there were still a lot of fish to see, including a few that are found nowhere else in the world. My master diver is a scientist and the dive is actually a scientific endeavor, not a tourist-based project. I followed him around as he counted fish and their newly hatched young. It was exhilarating!

Some students at the Spanish school took a mile hike around the lake's edge and I joined them. They pointed out a section along the shoreline that has hot thermal vents. I took a swim in the warm water, some areas which were 90 degrees. On the way back we spotted a howler monkey chilling in a tree eating some leaves. I think I snapped a few good photos that I plan on sharing when I get home.

I will be hiking out of here tomorrow and should be in a Granada hostel tomorrow.

Ok, I've checked in with the digital world. It is time to go back into the jungles.

Thanks for reading,
