Need to Leave Lagos! | June 17, 2003 | Travel Day 9

I have a bruise on my right leg extending from mid-shin to below my ankle. My right toe and left knee have wounds that are infected from being scraped up on the rocks. My right hand is swollen because I´m very allergic to insect bites. My left hip is killing me from a spill I took at Joe´s Garage - those bar stools are way too high. Sherry and I are broken women and we need to get the hell out of this town which has sapped us of all energy. In the words of Julien, "I feel like someone could take a spoon and just stir my brain."

The past two days have been incredibly lazy...our days don´t begin until about 2pm. It´s sad. Monday was spent trying to recover from the drama of the night before. Let´s see, how should I explain...

Shad - gorgeous Canadian girl whose parents are from Fiji
Julien - gorgeous French-Canadian guy who has a great sense of humor
Peter - laid back guy from Los Angeles

Shad and Julien are "best friends" backpacking through Europe together, although I´m convinced the "When Harry Met Sally" theory applies here. Sunday night we all go out and Julien and I have a great time, getting along really well, though Shad sulks the entire night. Peter, the stright-up kid from LA tells Shad that she´s in love with Julien, which evokes TEARS and name-calling on her part. Shad storms drunkenly around town before going home. Peter mutters, "I just tell it like it is." Julien sides with Peter.

Julien and I talk for 2 hours on his balcony and watch the sun rise. He´s shaken up about the Shad episode. So, much of Monday is spent in an unnecessary and unappreciated triangle of tension which I came on holiday to AVOID!

Glad that Sherry is here. Monday night we have our ritualistic dinner at Casa Rosa (the backpackers´ paradise with beers and endless games of Connect Four). End up going to the Red Eye Bar (Aussie Central), then Three Monkeys, where we meet two guys from Auckland. Gotta love the Kiwi accent! Meet up with Shad and Julien at the Old Tavern, go to Joe´s Garage where Sherry and I dance on the bar with two girls from Chicago. Shad sulks and goes home. Hang out with Randy, 35 year old divorce from Rome who says he "appreciates" our company, whatever that means! Spend the rest of the night dancing and chatting with Julien.

Julien loves politics, drum and base and hates the antics of his best friend Shad. They still have Spain, Italy and Greece left. I tell Julien that there´s more drama ahead for him.

Julien and Shad took off for Sevilla yesterday afternoon. Feel a bit sad. Walked around town yesterday and laughed at the sign outside Eddie´s Bar which read, "Free Shot with Every Mullet!" Had dinner last night at Casa Rosa again and saw the guy we met on the train, Kent. He´s from Edmonton, Canada. He introduced us to Matt, Kim and Daniel, all from Australia. More of the same Lagos bar scene, Joe´s Garage, Calypso. Kim, who ironically is a photographer, DROPPED MY CAMERA in his drunken stupor and BROKE IT!!!! I´m so angry that my camera is broken. I can´t repair it here. Maybe in Sevilla but most probably in London. Need to get out of Lagos. My liver is begging me to and I feel like a waste of space. Hopefully Sevilla will have more culture and less cheap beer.
